The Samoyed
The Samoyed is one of the oldest breeds known to man. According to the American Kennel Club, the Samoyed is the most closely related to the primitive dog of all the modern breeds. They are a member of Group 3, the Working group, in both the Canadian and American Kennel Clubs and a member of the Spitz group in European formats.
Samoyeds were originally a multipurpose dog, bred by the nomadic Samoyede people to hunt, pull sleds, herd reindeer and keep their children warm at night. They were closely integrated into every aspect of human life and this clearly shows through in their sweet and soft temperament. Later, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, they were employed on Arctic and Antarctic expeditions to the poles. Many of today's Samoyeds are descendants of these adventurous Sammies!
Samoyeds are known for their beautiful coats with the silver tips. They can come in a variety of shades of white including pure white, cream and biscuit. Many Sams have a single black hair which Sammy people call their lucky hair! The coat itself is a double coat, composed of harsh outer guard hairs to keep out the elements and a soft downy undercoat to keep them warm. Sammies should never, ever be shaved. The bitches usually shed twice a year, male dogs once (though they can have a slight shed midseason). Some people will save and card the wool to use for making handicrafts. Many lovely blankets and sweaters have been woven or knitted from Samoyed fur. Be prepared if you bring a Sam into your life to spend a whole bunch of time with your broom and your dog brush!
Samoyeds are happy, playful dogs that are not suited to a solitary life. They are happiest when they are kept close to their families and can be prone to destructive behaviour and excessive barking if left alone for long periods of time. They are not "outside" dogs and should never be left outside unattended for long periods of time. However, when given adequate exercise and attention, they are devoted companions that are just as happy to lie quietly by your side while you watch TV, or go on an epic hike through the brush. Sammies are excellent dogs with children, and can be good with other animals if introduced at a young age. A fenced yard is essential to protect the Sammy from danger. They are known "escape artists" that will wander a many kilometre radius if the opportunity presents itself.
Early training is essential to give Sammy puppies the "ground rules" for home life. This will help to curb their natural inclination to dig, and chew (and maybe ingest) all kinds of things. Ask about our recommendations for trainers in your area!

“We who choose to surround ourselves
with lives even more temporary than our
own, live within a fragile circle;
easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps,
we would still live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only
certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan.”
